Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology Presents:

Living Earth Community

The Living Earth Community brings together scientific, spiritual, humanistic, and legal
perspectives to explore the vibrancy of Earth as a living system.

Here, you’ll encounter ecological worldviews, the intelligences of the more-than-human
world, and the evolving field of Earth law. The platform connects scholarship, stories, and
practices that deepen our understanding of a living planet and invite us into new ways
of seeing, relating, and acting.

Joining the Living Earth Community means walking with others who believe that
humanity’s destiny cannot be separated from the destiny of Earth.

“The destiny of humans cannot be
separated from the destiny of Earth.”
— Thomas Berry

WHAT IS LIVING EARTH COMMUNITY?

The mission of Living Earth Community is to deepen the dialogue on sentient, cognitive, and creative capacities in nature, while also reflecting on the way humans view and respond to those capacities. Through scientific discoveries, interdisciplinary discussions, and wisdom traditions, we aim to challenge assumptions, expand understanding, and engage questions regarding the liveliness and intelligences within the other-than-human world.

The Living Earth Community website is a digital repository of scientific, spiritual, humanistic, and legal resources that explore the diverse ways Earth and its inhabitants express sentience, intelligence, and creativity. It is organized into four sections—What is a Living Earth Community?, Intelligences of Nature, Ecological Worldviews, and Earth Law—bringing together voices from scientific research, legal frameworks, interdisciplinary thought, and wisdom traditions. The platform invites users to reimagine human relationships with the natural world and to transform ethical obligations, legal systems, social practices, and the way we navigate the natural world.

While this website engages a wide range of voices across traditions, geographies, and disciplines, its lineage is traced through the Journey of the Universe project to the Great Work of geologian Thomas Berry.
